It began in the Pacific, carried on canoes as a promise of survival. It survived colonialism in the Caribbean, feeding those who were forced to labor. Today, as climate change threatens our global food systems, the Breadfruit tree is still standing.
Breadfruit: The Canopy of the World is not just a documentary. It is a cinematic journey through 3,000 years of history, trauma, and resilience. From the forests of New Guinea to the kitchens of Jamaica, discover why the tree we forgot is the one we need the most.
"Breadfruit is not just a fruit; it is culture, it is trauma, it is passion."
THE HISTORY
"A Living Calendar"
Tracing the voyages of the ancestors who carried life across the ocean. We are reclaiming the stories of the canoe plants.
THE SCIENCE
"Climate Smart"
While rice and wheat fail in a warming world, breadfruit holds. One tree feeds a family for 60 years.
THE FUTURE
"Food Sovereignty"
Moving from dependency to dignity. Supporting the farmers, chefs, and communities building a new economy from the roots up.
"When you plant an Ulu tree, it's not about just feeding your family. It's about feeding a community. Um, that the abundance that comes from just one tree is enough to, is more than enough to feed a family. It's enough to feed a community."

"The British Empire moved plants across it with a systematic vigor, just completely indifferent to indigenous plant landscapes, as it were, just made things, remade things. And that was the colonial thing. Let's go to a place, chop the trees down, plant something else, do whatever you need to do, because it's about us."

"It's just unbelievable the knowledge our ancestors had passed down because the sap becomes the glue and becomes gum to create a way to process the ulu where it would work; that became our vehicle for going across this vast ocean of ours and everybody that plant came in contact with survived because of that plant."

"From the functional perspective, when you are eating, you need to create a balance. I believe balance is the best approach always. The nature always is telling us that if something is on balance, she's going to take charge of that and make an arrangement to get us in balance too. So when we are designing our plate, we need balance. And breadfruit comes, has a lot of value because it provides a lot of nutrients that by itself, it gives you a whole food with a super food and super nutrients inside,
